Cornhole Terminology - Get the Lingo

Cornhole is fast becoming a tradition for many family get-togethers and tailgate parties and while many other people, friends and family members, may already know a lot of the terminology that goes along with the cornhole game, you may find yourself at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to keeping up. You don't have to continue to guess at what they're talking about or have to feel stupid for asking about everything they say. The following terms are the most commonly associated with cornhole.

Bean Bag Beans

Cow Pie (or Ace): This occurs when the bag lands on the board. This is worth one point.

Back Door: When a bag bounces or slides over another bag and goes in the hole for three points.

Backstop: When a bag lands at the back of the board, but just past the hole. This allows a subsequent throw to use it as a backstop.

Blocker: When a cow pie stops in front of the hole. This essentially blocks the hole from any thrower that prefers to slide their bean bags to the hole, rather than toss them high and bounce it in.

Cornhole: When a throw goes into the hole. This is worth three points.

Dirty Bag: Any bean bag that is either on the ground or leaning off the board but touching the ground. No points for dirty bags.

Galbraith: Knocking all four bean bags in one turn through the hole.

Hanger: You'll see this quite a bit when a bag (cow pie or ace) hangs over the hole but doesn't drop in.

Jumper: This happens when a bag strikes another one already on the board and then 'jumps' into the cornhole.

Leprechaun: When a player makes all four tosses onto the board but none get into the hole.

Power Wash: This occurs when all four tosses from each player lands on the board. Since the score is tied, it's a wash for that round - no one earns points.

Sally (or corn patty): When the toss is too short and the bean bag lands before the board.

Shucker: When a toss hits another player's bean bag already on the board and subsequently knocks it off the board.

Skunk: A shutout.

Slider: A cornhole that slides into the hole.

These are just some of the terms that are being used today in cornhole. Once you have a working knowledge of the different, and unique, terms, then you're ready to jump into the conversation and have a load of fun with the other cornhole game enthusiasts.

· 1/3 cup whiskey

· 1/3 cup soy sauce (Low sodium)

· 3 tbsp Brown sugar

· 2 tbsp cider vinegar

· 3 cloves garlic

· 1 tsp black pepper

· 1 tsp red pepper flakes

· 1 tbsp cornstarch

Mix first seven ingredients together. Save ¼ cup of the mixture. Pour the remaining marinade over the pork chops in a sealed plastic bag. Refrigerate the pork chops overnight.

Before grilling the chops, mix cornstarch into the ¼ cup of unused marinade. Gently heat until bubbly and thickened into a golden sauce.

Serve the grilled pork chops with a spoonful of the sauce over the top.

Hot Green Bean Salad With Potatoes

2 tbsp olive oil

1 small or ½ medium onion, chopped

1 slice onion finely chopped

1/8 tsp salt

1/8 tsp black pepper

2 tbsp corn starch

1 to 1 ¼ cup sugar

1 cup white vinegar

32 oz Green beans, cooked

2 to 4 medium potatoes, diced and cooked

4 slices of bacon, crumbled

Cut bacon into small pieces with a kitchen shears. Fry the bacon until crispy. Place the bacon on a paper towel to drain the bacon fat.

In a clean deep fry pan add olive oil, small chopped onion, salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat until the onion has a slightly golden color.

Continue cooking the onion and add the corn starch and mix into the onion thoroughly. Add the sugar and mix again.

Add the vinegar to the entire mixture and keep stirring over the heat until all the ingredients have melded together. Allow the mixture to cook until hot and bubbly. When the sauce has thickened, remove from the heat.

Cook the green beans and potatoes together until both are tender. Rinse and drain in a colander.

Place the beans and potatoes into a serving dish. Pour the warm sauce over the beans and potatoes. Sprinkle the finely chopped onion on top along with the crispy bacon bits.

Low-Budget Tips: This is a great summer dish because it can be made with your home-grown green beans. I prefer to nip the bean ends and keep the beans whole. If fresh market beans are not available, frozen green beans will work well, too. Some stores also have whole frozen green beans.

Pick the beans when mature, but still thin. The beans get tough when their seeds get too fat. Cook the beans until tender. Make sure they are no longer crisp. For variation you can also use fresh yellow beans. I prefer the color contrast of the green beans and white potatoes.

Lean and Healthy Tips: This dish can be made with the bacon fat instead of the olive oil. This will produce a stronger bacon flavor. I replace the bacon fat with olive oil to keep the calories and fat to a minimum. White flour will also work in place of the corn starch. This will give the sauce a milky appearance. The corn starch creates a clear or translucent appearance. I find that many prepared bean salads are too sour. You can add more or less sugar to the sauce to suit your personal taste. (Kids will like this better with more sugar.)

I get many emails each day from curious people asking about the game of Cornhole. With that in mind I decided to write a couple articles to maybe clear up some of the myths and facts of the game. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you get some useful information from reading them.

Cornhole bags are offered in many different colors, designs and sizes.

Q. What is a regulation Cornhole bag?

A. According to the American Cornhole Association, here is the specifications on a regulation cornhole bag.

8. The corn bags shall be made from two fabric squares with a quarter inch double stitched seam on all four sides. The corn bags should be made from 12 oz / sq yd duck canvas and may be any color that is easy to see during Cornhole play. Each bag shall be filled with approximately 2 cups of corn feed and finished bags should be a minimum of 6" X 6" square and weigh between 14 and 16 ounces.

Common questions to ask a seller.

Are the bags made of 12 oz. Duck Cloth?

Duck cloth comes in different ounce weights. #12 oz. duck cloth is heavy and durable for a long lasting bag. Anything less is cheaper and will not last as long. There is a reasonable difference in quality between 12 oz 10 oz and 8 oz duck cloth. I would not settle for less than #12 oz duck cloth.

Do the bags weigh between 14 and 16 ounces?

Bags that are under or over weight are not regulation and do not provide a consistent playing field.

Are the bags filled with real whole kernel corn?

If it is not whole kernel corn, it's not regulation. Whole kernel corn produces a fine dust that is used to provide a coating for your bags and boards for consistent play. Also synthetic fillers will most likely cause your bag to be over filled or under filled to meet the weight requirements. Popcorn and pinto beans are not regulation.

Logo printed materials are not Duck Cloth and are not regulation. These materials may look nice, but they do not provide a consistent playing field. These materials often shred and tear under normal Cornhole play. Placing these materials over duck cloth also provides inconsistent play.

Decal / Iron On Logos. These may look nice as well, but they will not last when playing on a concrete surface, as they will begin to wear after one game.

Embroidered Logos. These are over all some of the nicest bags you can buy. The logo is stitched into the material and provides a nice personalized touch to your cornhole bags.

What do I consider A High Quality Cornhole Bag?

Made with nothing less that 12 oz. 100% Duck Cloth, filled with whole kernel corn feed between 14 and 16 oz, 6 inches by 6 inches after filled, double stitched with Heavy duty upholstery thread.
